Fujairah Customs was established through am Emiri decree issued by his highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Supreme Council and Ruler of Fujairah, in 1983. This ushered a new dawn in Fujairah. Significance of that period was the simplicity of customs procedures.
The department was composed of two divisions – Clearance (documentation) and Inspection located in Fujairah Port. Due to the rapid local and international changes and high volume of investments and trade whether intra-regional, regional or international, it was necessary to keep up and adapt to such development. Hence the expansion was witnessed in all sections of the department. In order to facilitate improvement and increase competencies of the department invested in the development to modernize, train and acquire equipment and local manpower being fully aware of the huge responsibility assumed to the department due to the rapid growth, investment and economic turnaround.
The main focus after that was to increase the number of divisions. The following divisions were added. Inspection section in the Fujairah Port (Cargo Section). With the increase in the number of travelers through Fujairah Airport, inspection division was also opened in the passenger section. Inspection sections were also opened in 3 freezones and Post office as well. Hence covering the Port and Airport. The sections all worked in coordination with the customs head office. It was ensured that the work method was compatible with the Fujairah Government’s policy and department regulation. Team work and coordination wad emphasized as a per-requisite for effective results.
In the next phase embarked on the strategic planning that is envisaged to improve the performance, increase the proficiency and lay down the laws.
Today the department has become an institutional structure striving to serve the country’s goals by applying the best scientific methods and best practices.
